Are homegrown sprouts safe?

Yes! Homegrown sprouts are very safe. Some people are worried about sprouting safety as there have been outbreaks associated with sprouts from grocery stores. Like other food borne illnesses, such as meat and spinach, store bought products which are produced on a large scale are difficult to keep free of all pathogens. But homegrown sprouts are very safe! Our sprout seed has been treated with a hypochlorite solution, and then tested to be negative for pathogens in the 99.999 + range. This means that there are no discernable traces of bacteria in your sprout seed, and you are can enjoy delicious, fresh sprouts with complete peace of mind.

Why are my sprouts growing so slow?

There are many variables that can slow sprout germination and growth, from temperature to light. For ideal growing conditions, ensure your sprouts are growing in a dark place, that the temperature isn’t too cold, and that they’re watered daily. The ideal temperature for high quality sprouts is between 20-26˚C; however, 26-30˚C will speed up the process of sprout growth.

How can I tell my sprouts have gone bad?

If your sprouts look slimy and begin to smell bad/rancid, it’s probably best to toss them and start another cycle of greens.

How long do sprouts stay good?

Sprouts should stay good for 1.5 to 2 weeks in the fridge. You'll have an indication that your sprouts have gone bad if they have begun to shrivel and dry up, or if they are slimy and have a slightly rancid smell.

Help, my sprouts are covered in white, fuzzy mold!

Not to worry! This is most likely not mold. While sprouts are growing, they develop fuzzy root hairs, which can be easily confused with white mold. However, this is not likely the case. If your sprouts are moldy, the mold will often be in uneven clusters, speckled with black, have a slimy base and off smell, and/or have a cobweb-like appearance. One easy way to check this is to water your sprouts—if the hairs disappear, that means they were just thirsty roots.

If your sprouts are indeed moldy, this is likely because they are too wet or, less often, have too little air flow. Make sure your jars are properly drained (we leave ours upside down on the trays after watering) and in a place where the air isn't too stagnant.

What if some of my sprouts or microgreens are moldy? Do I have to throw everything away?

Sometimes, due to unideal growing conditions, your sprouts or microgreens may develop patches of mold. If the patch is small and has not spread, you likely do not have to throw away the whole jar. We recommend cutting away the moldy areas and thoroughly washing the rest, which should be safe to eat. If the mold is more widespread, it is unfortunately time to toss your sprouts and start a new jar.

Do you only ship in Canada?

Currently, we only ship within Canada. However, we’re excited to begin shipping to the United States in the near future!

Why is shipping not free to P.O. Boxes?

Unfortunately, Net Parcel (the shipping company we use to ship our sprouts across Canada) doesn’t ship to P.0 Boxes. Because this forces us to use a much more costly shipping company, we have to charge more for shipping.
